I’ve played my first joker and it’s not even for fiction!

Five months into my 2017 challenge of buying no new books during the year, and I’ve just used my first of three emergency lifelines. As it turns out, it’s not even a work of fiction. It’s a book about yoga. Wanderlust – A Modern Yogi’s Guide to Discovering Your Best Self by Jeff Krasno.

I’ve done yoga on and off for years as a perpetual beginner, but have been practicing daily for a while now, as a way to escape the crazy political meltdown that was beginning to really eat at me and stress me out. I’ve found that time spent on the mat really calming, and anything that improves my flexibility, strength and stamina at the same time as chilling me out has got to be a good thing.

Now I’m practicing yoga daily again I can remember how good it felt when I practiced regularly in the past, but for some reason I’d fallen out of the habit. Not wanting it to fall by the wayside again, I bought Wanderlust to help inspire me and keep me on the right track. It is full of stunning pictures and has a workbook feel to it, with spaces to write and tasks to complete. It might be a bit ‘coffee table’ in size and format, but it is a lovely addition to my small yoga library and a quick flick through its beautiful pages will be just the thing to motivate me on days when I’m dragging my heels towards the mat.

As I don’t live near enough to a class I usually use yoga dvds. As a late birthday present to myself, I recently bought myself Yoga 30 For 30 by Travis Eliot and Lauren Eckstrom, which is a varied programme of downloadable 30 minute classes, including optional extra short classes in meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques) and core strength. I’m now on my second round of 30 days and I’m really seeing beneficial effects on my fitness and well-being.


When I started the programme the classes were so good that my son, home from Navigational college at the time, decided to join in. My daughter joins in sometimes, and miraculously, now even my husband has started doing it – I never thought I’d see the day when that happened! My son is now at sea somewhere off the coast of Malasia (he’s a cadet in the Merchant Navy) but he’s still rolling out his yoga towel in his cabin each morning to get his daily yoga fix.

It seems to be doing us all the world of good, so fingers crossed we can keep it up. Hopefully Wanderlust will help!
